With CLAC on your side, you will have a full-time representative to provide direct day-to-day professional representation. CLAC representatives will lead all significant labour relations activities including • Membership meetings • Labour-management meetings • Grievances and arbitrations • WSIB and return-to-work accommodation meetings • Collective bargaining With other unions, stewards are responsible for most of these duties themselves—often with very little support from a full-time union representative. Our model provides you with better service because it does not rely on employees acting as stewards to be labour relations experts. It also avoids the potential pitfalls faced by stewards who are ultimately an employee of the organization they are advocating against. CLAC representatives are professionally trained in labour relations and do not work for your employer. They can make the tough decisions and do the right thing without politics or fear of repercussions. Service Ratios CLAC has one of the lowest member-to-representative ratios in Canada (900:1), which means a higher standard of representation. Other unions operate at a member-to-representative ratio that is two or three times higher. This creates a natural dependence on stewards because there are just not enough full-time professional representatives to provide service. With this type of service model, it is not uncommon to have collective agreements that are years out of date and for grievances to go months or years without being addressed. Ultimately, this creates a climate of disengagement within the membership because nothing ever seems to be addressed in a timely fashion. When grievances occur, CLAC will advocate on your behalf and will push to ensure outstanding issues are adjudicated and resolved to your satisfaction.
